Choosing a bed: mattress size, room, storage

A bed needs more room than its mattress: you have to get past it and change the sheets. Slats, headboard and storage come after that. Edwin is an AI advisor and asks about the room and the mattress size first.

  • Allow walking space along at least one long side. A bed you squeeze past makes the room feel tight.
  • A bed frame’s outer dimensions are noticeably larger than the mattress — a 160 cm bed needs considerably more than 160 cm of wall.
  • Under-bed storage replaces a wardrobe but needs room to open: drawers need it at the side, lift-up bases above.
  • The slatted base belongs to the mattress, not the frame — a good base does not rescue a mediocre mattress, and a bad one ruins a good mattress.

How much space should stay around the bed?

Enough on at least one long side to stand comfortably and change the sheet. With two people, access from both sides is effectively a requirement.

Lift-up base or drawers?

Lift-up bases hold more and need clearance above; drawers are easier day to day but need clear floor at the side. The room decides, not taste.
