In short
We earn commissions. When you buy from a retailer through a link on this site, that retailer usually pays us a commission. That is our entire business model. It costs you nothing — you pay the same price you would pay without us.
The size of that commission does not affect which products we recommend or the order in which they appear. How that is technically enforced is explained in How recommendations work.
What an affiliate link is
Links to retailers on this site are generally affiliate links. They carry an identifier that tells the retailer you came from us. If you then buy something, we receive a share of the sale.
We label these links "Ad".
What we compare — and what we don't
We compare offers from retailers we are connected to through affiliate partner networks. There may be retailers with better prices that do not appear here.
We say this plainly because it matters to your decision. A comparison covering part of the market is a useful tool — it is not a survey of the whole market.
The networks we work with
- Amazon Associates
- Awin
- CJ Affiliate
- Rakuten Advertising
- Tradedoubler
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
What we don't do
- No sponsored placements. No retailer can buy a position in our rankings.
- No paying for better assessments. Our evaluations are independent of commission rates.
- No hidden advertising. Affiliate links are labelled.
- We do not sell your data.
- No incentivised clicks.
Why we do it this way
A recommendation service whose ordering can be bought is not a recommendation service — it is an advertising slot. We decided against that, not only on principle but because it is the only thing that distinguishes us from an advertising slot in the long run.
The separation is enforced technically: the system that determines ordering is never given the retailer, network or commission data at all. It could not weight them even if we wanted it to.
Prices
Prices and availability come from our partners' data feeds and are checked automatically on a regular basis. They can change between our last check and your click. The retailer's price at the time of purchase always prevails. Every price shows when we last checked it.
Prices are shown as displayed by the retailer for the relevant market. In the EU and the UK, prices include VAT unless stated otherwise; shipping is not included unless stated otherwise. In the United States, prices are generally shown excluding sales tax, as is customary there.
Questions
If you want to know whether a particular link is an affiliate link, or how a specific recommendation came about, email us at contact@thebutler.network. We will tell you.
